Grants in 2017

Monday, June 26, 2017 | The BWGC

Another grants cycle has been successfully concluded!

This year, we had 119 energetic and dedicated volunteers divided into 18 teams.  These teams read and evaluated 104 grant applications, conducted 54 site visits, and ultimately recommended 38 grants to be considered for funding.  A list of organizations approved for grants in 2017 is below.

This year, we had two major changes to the grants process.  First, we altered how we award two-year grants.  In the past, we conducted one-year and two-year grant evaluations simultaneously using entirely separate applications and teams.

This year, all applicants used a single application, but those who were interested could complete an additional section applying for a two-year grant.  The teams evaluated all the applications, and we voted on the one-year grant proposals first.  The proposals that received the most votes (and who expressed interest in receiving a two-year grant) moved on to be considered for an additional year of funding.  This process resulted in five contenders for two two-year grants.  The Circle has funded these five contenders, collectively, 16 times in the past, so they represent organizations that fit well with our mission and deliver high quality programs.

In addition, this year was the first time that all Circle members were invited to participate in the selection of all grant recipients.  Members were invited to both the one-year and two-year presentation meetings, and all members who attended these meetings were eligible to vote.  We can definitively say “the people have spoken” in making our grant awards.  The process worked well and we anticipate using the same process next year.
